Spooks unintentionally made me think of this in the thread about kicking around comic book ideas. In a rather interesting trivia note, did you know Spider-Mans enemy Venom was supposed to be a woman originally?
It's true. Back in the late 80's when the character of Venom was being dreamed up, Marvel had the alien symbiote but no one to put it on. Their original idea was to have it bond with a woman who had lost her husband and baby in a fight between Spidey and one of his many enemies (I don't recall who the bad guy was, it may not have even been determined). This woman would have been so full of hatred towards Spider-Man, whom she blamed for not saving her family, that she would have bonded with the alien and together they would have become Venom.
It was hoped that Spidey would have gained a powerful female member to his rogues gallery, which actually would have been his first female archenemy, but the idea was eventually scrapped. I suspect Marvel may have balked at the idea of Spider-Man being put in a position of striking a woman, despite the fact that said woman would have been a little more physically stronger than he. At the end of the day, Spidey is their corporate icon afterall.
Still, it's interesting to think about what could have been.
